Richmond T. Selley

Richmond T. "Dick" Selley, 104, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Born in New Bedford on December 21, 1921, he was the son of the late George and Helen (Bowen) Selley and the beloved husband of the late Mary (Carney) Selley, with whom he raised four children.

Dick proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1951, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. A decorated veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, he remained proud of his service throughout his life.

Dick was one of seven children, and all five of his brothers served in various branches of the armed forces. Among them was his twin brother, Robert Briggs Selley. In January 1942, the twins enlisted to serve their country, Dick in the Marine Corps and Robert in the Army. Robert was killed in action off the shores of North Africa in 1943. Dick honored his brother's memory throughout his life.

Following his military service, Dick worked for Bay Bank for 25 years as head of maintenance and for the City of New Bedford for 20 years as a night janitor.

A longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrews-Dahill Post 1531, Dick enjoyed bowling and golfing with his VFW friends at Little Harbor in Marion during his retirement. At the age of 90, he bowled a remarkable 300 during a practice game.

Dick is survived by his four children, Peter Selley and his wife, Janice, of New Bedford; Kathleen (Selley) Rhodes of North Dartmouth, wife of the late Michael Rhodes; Margaret Selley of New Bedford; and Richmond Selley and his wife, Gretchen, of New Bedford. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren, Bethany, Nicholas, Caitlin, Troy, Ellen, Ryan, and Meghan, and nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary, and by all of his siblings.

Dick's 104 years were marked by service, hard work, and devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. His funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 10:45 a.m., followed by burial with full military honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 12:30 p.m.
