Rita A. Sheerin

Rita A. (Charest) Sheerin, 97, of Fairhaven died July 21, 2026 peacefully at home.

Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Victorien C. and Blanche D. (Talbot) Charest, she lived in New Bedford before moving to Fairhaven in 1997.

Rita was a dedicated teacher at Hannigan School and Hayden-McFadden School, leaving a lasting impact on the many students whose lives she touched. Upon her retirement, Rita continued to enjoy her passion for reading, exploring new destinations through travel, and most importantly, treasuring precious moments with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, James "J.B." Sheerin and his wife Colleen of Lakeville; a daughter, Dr. Kathleen Moncino and her husband Mark of Sandy Springs, GA; 4 grandchildren, Thomas Sheerin, Kate Sheerin, Harrison Moncino and Owen Moncino; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Annette Dwyer and Gerald Cherest.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dana Britton and the Community Nurse Hospice team for their wonderful and compassionate care.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 4th at 10 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Her family will receive guests at church, Tuesday morning from 9 - 10 am in church before the Mass. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
