Robert L. Holmes, 76, of Acushnet died Wednesday September 24, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late William Holmes and Yvonne (Ouellette) Holmes Francis, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Acushnet seven years ago.

Mr. Holmes was self-employed as a painter.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his companion of 38 years, Mary Jane Brown; his children, Walter Hebert and Shannon McGuinness; his brother, Albert Holmes; and several grandchildren.


He was the brother of the late William Holmes, David Holmes, and Harry Holmes.


A committal service with military honors will be held on Friday October 3, 2014 at 1 PM at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Bedford. Visiting hours are omitted. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
