Robert F. "Bob" Thomas, 79, of New Bedford passed away Friday January 24, 2025 after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Marsha A. (Hogan) Thomas.
Born in Acushnet, the son of the late George and Mary (Dufort) Thomas, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Bob was formerly employed as a corrections officer at MCI Bridgewater where he had been in charge of the K-9 Unit. He was instrumental in training numerous canines throughout the state. In his retirement, he was employed as a security officer at Bally's Tiverton Casino.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. An avid automobile enthusiast, he was a member of the Downshifters Car Club.
He is survived by his children, Shawn Thomas and his wife Jodi and MaryEllen Cerce and her husband Keith; four grandchildren, Colin Thomas, Riley Thomas, Jake Cerce, and Luke Cerce; his brother, Walter "Buddy" Thomas; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
His funeral will be held on Friday January 31st at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 10 AM.
