Robert Whitehead

Robert Whitehead, 97, of Largo, Florida, formerly of New Bedford passed away on Sunday July 19, 2026. He was the husband of the late Claire M. (Richard) Whitehead.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Trevlying and Ethel (Neagus) Whitehead, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Florida in 1997.

Bob was employed as a barber in New Bedford for over 40 years, operating his own shop on Cedar Street until his retirement. He was a graduate of Vaughn's Barber School in Boston.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany.

While living in New Bedford, he was a parishioner of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Stang Council, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrews-Dahill Post 1531.

He is survived by two daughters, Debra Harrington and Donna Fish; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Dorothy Freitas, Russell Whitehead, Donald Whitehead, and Carl Whitehead.

His graveside service will be held on Tuesday August 18th at 11 AM at Acushnet Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
