Obituary

Roger R. Blanchard, 84, of New Bedford, passed away surrounded by family at Charlton Memorial Hospital on Sunday October 12, 2025.

Born in New Bedford on December 23, 1940, Roger was the son of Lionel and Jeannette Blanchard and the son-in-law of Herbert and Alice Carter. He graduated from St. Anthony's High School in New Bedford and went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Air Force. During his four years of service, he spent time stationed in Korea, a chapter of his life that reflected his dedication and sense of duty.

Following his military service, Roger built a long-standing career with My Bread Baking Company. He began his career as a Driver Salesman and worked his way up to Branch Manager. His work ethic and commitment were evident throughout his professional life, earning him the respect of colleagues and friends.

Family was at the heart of Roger's world. He was a loving husband, father, and adoring grandfather who cherished every moment spent with those closest to him. He is remembered with love by his wife of 62 years, Mary (Carter) Blanchard and children, Maureen Garcia and her husband John of Fairhaven, Roger Blanchard, Jr. and his wife Deanne of Acushnet, Herbert Blanchard and his wife Cathi of Sutton, and James Blanchard of Acushnet. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, John and Meagan Garcia, Sydney and Samantha Blanchard, Shannon, Kiley, and Shea Blanchard, and several beloved granddogs and cats.

Roger also leaves behind his siblings: Pauline Paradis (wife of the late Raymond Paradis), Ronald Blanchard and his wife Denise Blanchard, Robert Blanchard, Janice Labrie (wife of the late Robert Labrie), as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A man of many interests, Roger found joy in going on cruises with his wife and many dear friends. He enjoyed playing a rousing game of Petit Bonhomme at his friends' lakeside cottage in New Hampshire. He was an avid bowler who bowled his first 300 at the age of 73. He had a passion for reading, puzzles, and playing games on his iPad. A devoted sports fan, he rarely missed a baseball, hockey, or football game. His love for Elvis Presley and the Golden Oldies filled many afternoons with nostalgia and rhythm. And when it came to sweet treats, few things delighted him more than butterscotch pudding, a coffee frappe, or a good banana split.

Whether coaching his sons' little league teams, cheering from the sidelines at a grandchild's game or school play, sharing stories over a good clam boil, or playing the penny slots with his wife, he created lasting memories that will be treasured by all who knew him.

May Roger's memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing and joy to those who recall the moments they shared with him.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday October 20th at 11 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.  Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Monday morning from 9-10:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of one's choice.
