It is with a broken heart that we share the passing of our beloved Ronald J. Rego, 73, of East Freetown. He passed peacefully surrounded by his family after a brief unexpected illness. Born in New Bedford, he was the loving son of the late Manuel and Rita (Fortin) Rego. He graduated from Bishop Stang High School Class of 1971 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Southeastern Massachusetts University. He worked for Raytheon in Portsmouth, RI for 25 years and continued his career at NUWC in Newport, RI specializing in submarine sonar until his retirement in 2017.
Anyone who met Ron knew he was a fun-loving, gentle, and easygoing man. He shared 32 fun filled years of marriage with his wife Cathy (Welch). Together they enjoyed traveling, spending their summers in Maine by the beach, and walking their dog Jackson. His greatest joy in life was being a dad to his three children. He loved reading with his son Brian, running with his daughter Kristin, and seeing the world with his daughter Jenny. He liked working in his yard, kayaking, bowling, and eating sweets. He was always very social and left behind many dear friends.
Ron is survived by his wife Cathy and their daughter Jenny; his son Brian, his daughter Kristin, and their mother Joanne; his brother David; many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws; and his faithful furry companion Jackson.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday October 23rd at 10 AM at St. John Neumann Church, 157 Middleboro Rd., East Freetown. Visiting hours will be on Thursday October 22nd from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St, New Bedford. In memory of Ron, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association to support research and services for families at Alzheimer's Association .
