Sherry L. Macedo

Sherry Lee (Fortes) Macedo, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away on Saturday September 19, 2026, at the age of 62. Born on April 21, 1964, Sherry was born and raised in New Bedford, a community that remained an important part of her life. She was the daughter of the late Julio Fortes and Hilda (Gibau) Fortes.

Sherry was a hardworking and determined woman who took great pride in providing for her son, Carlos Joseph Macedo, and making sure he had what he needed. She worked hard to build a life for herself and her family.

Believing in the importance of helping others, Sherry earned her Associate Degree in Human Services, which gave her the opportunity to work with youth and families. Her education and career reflected her desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

In her younger years, Sherry also had the opportunity to pursue modeling for a brief time, an experience that became a special part of her life's story.

Sherry enjoyed cooking, especially preparing meals for those around her, and cherished spending time with her loved ones. She had a special love for the ocean, where she found happiness and peace.

She is survived by her son, Carlos Joseph Macedo of Boston; her longtime partner, Lawrence Ritter of Milford; and her sisters, Isabel Duarte and Elizabeth Fortes, both of New Bedford, and Alice Miranda of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, along with family members and loved ones who will continue to carry her memory with them.

She was predeceased by her parents, and her siblings, Allen R. Fortes, Julie A. Ramos, Marie Frates, and Sandra Fortes Blanton.

Sherry will be remembered for her strength, determination, hardworking spirit, and the life she worked so hard to build. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the memories she created, the love she shared, and the moments spent with those who knew and loved her will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

Though her life has come to an end, the love, memories, and pieces of herself that Sherry left with her family will remain-carried forward in the hearts of those who loved her.

At her request, a private family memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
