It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Paul Fortes, a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend at the age of 69. After his battle with cancer, Stephen is now at peace and reunited with those he loved who went before him.
A lifelong resident of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Stephen was the beloved son of the late Paul and Mary “Bea” (Cruz) Fortes. He was kind to everyone he met, with a warm heart and generous spirit. He loved singing and especially cherished spending time with his grandchildren, who brought so much joy to his life.
Stephen worked as a painter for the New Bedford Housing Authority and CertaPro, where he will be remembered for his dedication, hard work, and kindness toward others.
He leaves behind his three children, Shawn and Stefhan Gonsalves, both of New Bedford, and Keri Monteiro of Atlanta, Georgia; his cherished grandchildren; his sisters, Donna Duarte and Lori Fortes; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and amazing friends who loved him dearly.
Stephen has gone home to be reunited with his parents, his beloved son, Kevin Monteiro, his sisters, Paula Poole and Lisa DePina, and his brother, Robert Perch. There is comfort in knowing that after his battle with cancer, he is finally at peace and surrounded by those he loved who passed before him.
The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and staff at St. Luke’s Hospital, Hathaway Manor, SouthCoast Oncology Center, and SouthCoast Hospice for the care, compassion, and support they provided to Stephen.
Stephen will be greatly missed, but his love, kindness, laughter, singing, and the many memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Rest peacefully, Stephen. Your battle is over, and you will remain in our hearts forever.
His visitation will be held on Friday October 9th from 11 AM - 2 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, with a prayer service beginning at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
