Stephen R. Gomes

Stephen R. Gomes, 71, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2026, at Vantage at New Bedford. Stephen affectionately remembered by many as "Stevie or Yohan". His passing leaves a deep sadness in the hearts of those who loved him, but also a lasting gratitude for the memories, laughter, strength, and love he shared throughout his life.

Born in New Bedford, Stevie was the beloved son of the late Antonio S. "Geech" Gomes and Lydia (Freitas) Gomes. A lifelong resident of the city, Stevie carried New Bedford with him in so many ways through the friendships he built, the family bonds he cherished, and the community that helped shape the man he became. He was proud of where he came from, and those roots remained an important part of his identity throughout his life.  He was very proud of his children and he loved his entire family.

Stevie was formerly employed as a Special Education Aide with the New Bedford School Department, where he supported students with patience, kindness, and understanding. He later continued his career in public service as a Correctional Officer with the Bristol County House of Correction and then at MCI Bridgewater.

To many, Stevie will forever be remembered as one of the finest basketball players to come from the South Coast. From a young age, his gift on the court was undeniable. He helped lead Holy Family High School to a state title, and his talent, confidence, and natural ability left an impression on everyone who watched him play. Standing about 6'3", he could jump with remarkable ease, use either hand, handle the ball with skill, and pass with tremendous vision. Those who saw him play often said there were few, if any, weaknesses in his game. As a sophomore, he received the Kingcager Award, an honor traditionally awarded to a senior, reflecting the respect and admiration he earned at an early age.

Basketball opened doors and created memories that Stevie carried with him throughout his life. He was a member of several travel teams and had the opportunity to play during school vacations in England, Ireland, and Wales these experiences reflected not only his talent, but the promise others saw in him. He graduated from New Bedford High School in 1975, and went on to play basketball for Lynchburg Baptist College. He also attended Durham Business College.

Those who knew Stevie remember more than his accomplishments. They remember the pride, energy, and determination he brought to the game; the way his talent inspired admiration; and the way his name became part of local basketball history. Though a serious knee injury changed the course of his playing career, it never erased the impact he made or the respect he earned.

Stevie is survived by his son, Stephen Gomes, and his wife Nichole of Blythewood, South Carolina; his daughter, Tiffanie DePina of New Bedford; three brothers, the Reverend Martin Gomes, SS.CC., of Fairhaven, Thomas E. Gomes of Wareham, and the Reverend Edmund J. Gomes of Lynchburg, Virginia; and six sisters, Mary Louise Rodrigues, Linda Gomes, Helen Gomes Ackah, Regina Lopes, Debbie Cruz, and Kim Cruz, all of New Bedford. He is also survived by two grandsons, Ezekiel and Xavier, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was the brother of the late Ann Gomes Oliveira, George L. "Jake" Gomes, Wendy Fumo, and Paul Gomes, whose memories remain lovingly held within the family.

Stevie's family takes comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue through the lives of those who loved him, the stories shared about him, and the lasting impression he left on his community. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. Lastly we would like to thank the staff at Havenwood Rest Home and Vantage at New Bedford.

His visiting hours will be held on Saturday, August 15th from 12-3 PM with a service at 2 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford..
