Stephen Wayne "Steve" Marshalek, age 64, of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, passed away after a courageous battle with ALS on May 17, 2026. Steve was a lifelong resident of Dartmouth, where he was raised and built a life rooted in family, service, and community.
He was the beloved son of the late Rosamond (Sweet) Marshalek and Stephen Marshalek.
Steve was a proud graduate of Dartmouth High School, Ithaca College, and UMass Dartmouth School of Law. A dedicated public servant, he served as the Southeast Regional Chief of the Attorney General's Office, a role he held with integrity and compassion, until his retirement in 2025. In recognition of his character and commitment to justice, he was honored as a recipient of the St. Thomas More Medallion presented to him by the Diocese of Fall River at the annual Red Mass.
A talented and distinguished athlete, Steve played football at Ithaca College and carried that same passion for sports into his role as a father. He found the greatest joy in coaching his children in baseball and softball, and he never missed any of their games, performances, or milestones. In his 50s, he took up running alongside his daughter, embracing the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. Together, they completed multiple half marathons and proudly ran the Falmouth Road Race several times. His love for baseball, football, and golf remained a constant throughout his life as well.
Above all, Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He shared 38 years of marriage with his beautiful wife, Maura (Tweedie) Marshalek, whom he adored tremendously.
He leaves behind his loving children: Benjamin Marshalek and his wife, Chelsie (Boroski) Marshalek; Abigail (Marshalek) Gilbert and her husband, Ryan Gilbert; and Owen Marshalek. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren, Nathan Marshalek and Sage Gilbert, who brought him immeasurable joy and whom he loved more than words can express.
Steve is also survived by his father-in-law, Robert Tweedie; brother-in-law, Robert Tweedie Jr.; his sister-in-law, Jennifer (Murray) Tweedie; his niece, Madison Tweedie; his lifelong best friend, David Wright; and countless others who he befriended over the years.
Watching Steve face ALS-an illness that gradually took from him the very abilities that had long defined his life-was heartbreaking for those who loved him. For a man who valued movement, strength, and presence, the disease felt especially cruel. Yet even in the face of such loss, Steve's character never wavered. He will be remembered not for the illness he endured, but for his kindness, his resilience, his deep love for his family, and the quiet, steadfast way he always showed up for others. His family is deeply grateful for the overwhelming support, compassion, and generosity shown by their community and would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to Community Nursing for the exceptional care they provided to Steve. Steve's family would also like to express their appreciation to all those from Dartmouth Fire District 1 who went above and beyond to help support him during his illness.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday May 23rd at 10 AM at St. Mary's Church, 795 Dartmouth St., South Dartmouth. Everyone is invited to meet directly at church. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Visiting hours will be held on Friday May 22nd from 3-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, Steve wished for donations to be made to Compassionate Care ALS (CCALS), P.O. Box 1052, West Falmouth, MA 02574 or online at www.ccals.org/donate. For those unable to attend in person, the Funeral Mass will be livestreamed at www.stmarysdartmouth.org/watchmass.html.
