Obituary

Tomas Manuel Andrade Macedo, 73, of Pawtucket, RI, formerly of New Bedford, MA, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2024, after a brief illness.

He was born and raised in Brava, Cape Verde.  He was the son of the late Joaquim and Margarida (Andrade) Macedo.  He moved to New Bedford in 1966 where he lived for many years.  He later resided in Florida and Virginia before settling in Pawtucket several years ago.

One of Tomas' greatest accomplishments was his involvement in the historic expedition that led to the discovery of the Titanic. He was part of the renowned team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) and the National Geographic, which located the Titanic on September 1, 1985.  Serving aboard the Atlantis II, he played an essential role in the voyage that illuminated one of history's greatest maritime mysteries and brought the Titanic story back to life for the world.

His greatest joy was spending time with his daughters, grandchildren, and family.  He loved watching soccer and had a deep appreciation for his cars.  He enjoyed traveling, dancing, and spending time at the Bisca Tournament Cub.

He is survived by his daughters, Marilyn Macedo Wright (Ervin), and Tammy Macedo, both of Virgina; his siblings, Erlice Rodrigues (Antonio), Edmundo Macedo (Maria), Antonio Macedo (Debbie), Irisalva Macedo, Helia Macedo (Olavo), Helena Morton (James), Manuel Macedo, Osvaldo Gomes, Luis Dos Santos (Maria), Kathy Dos Santos, Dininho Fortes (Maria), Antonio Socorro (Ana), and Anna Almeida; his grandchildren, Brett Britto II (Antonia), Quaniece Thornton (Marcus), Jazmine Jones (Kenneth), Raven Wright (Adrian), Trevon Wright, and Robert Cheek (Dymond); his great-grandchildren, Aniyah, Brett III, Sanai, Kalani, Masai, Jaz'elle, and Kyrie; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He is also survived by his former wife, Francoise "Fanfi" Leitao.  Tomas shared a special bond with his best friend and brother, Nelson Gomes; his nephew, Nicholas Gomes; his niece, Nicole Macedo; and his aunt, Cizela Goncalves.

Tomas was the brother of the late Eloisa Castro and Nilo Macedo.
