Vernon M. Pais, M.D., 68, of Mattapoisett died Thursday August 7, 2008 of pancreatic cancer at his home. He was the beloved husband of Lois J. (Paoletti) Pais.
He was born in India and had been a resident of Newton for 33 years, moving to Mattapoisett two years ago.
Dr. Pais was on the active staff of Urology at Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center for 33 years, emeritus chief of Urology and clinical professor of Urology at Tufts University School of Medicine. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and many professional societies. With Dr. Lily Lawn, he pioneered ultrasound guided seed implantation of prostate; they had performed over 1,000 seed implants with a success rate at 98% in localized prostate cancer.
Lois and Vernon were instrumental in starting Cancer Care Advocates, a group of volunteers raising funds to provide for the needs of cancer patients.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lois J. (Paoletti), devoted sons Vernon Jr., M.D. of Hanover, NH and Edward of Westminster, MD; daughters-in-law, Sandra and Amanda; grandchildren, Eric, Kyle, Gabriella and Nicholas. His three sisters and one brother live in India and his youngest brother, Derek lives in Burlington, with his wife Jeanne and two children, Daniel and Hannah.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday August 15th from 4-8 PM at Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Road, Mattapoisett. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony's Church on Saturday August 16th at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Cushing Cemetery. Friends and relatives are kindly invited to attend.
